Organization Mission: The Oliver Scholars Program prepares high-achieving Black and Latinx students from underserved New York City communities for success at top independent high schools and prestigious colleges. We provide crucial support for both the scholars and their families so they can realize their full potential and ultimately give back to the city, the nation, and the world.
Position Summary & Reporting: Reporting to the Chief Program and Equity Officer, the Scholar Counselor will provide personal, academic, and college guidance to Scholars, from ninth grade through first-year of college. In addition to serving as the primary point of contact for Scholars and their families, the counselor will be responsible for managing the institutional relationships between Oliver Scholars and the academic and college counselors at the partner schools at which her/his students are enrolled. S/he will be proactive, detail oriented, organized, and capable of strategic thinking. S/he must also have a strong sense of purpose and passion for creating access to education for underserved students and be aspirational with regards to their own professional development.
Responsibilities:
- Engage Scholars in holistic guidance that encompasses personal, curricular, and college-application counseling with a goal of positioning each Scholar for long-term success.
- Conduct in-person counseling visits with each scholar at their boarding or day school to ensure academic and personal success.
- Maintain communication with scholars and families throughout the school year.
- Collaborate with school counselors and administration to monitor and provide each counselees’ progress, and provide guidance and intervention on a variety of Scholar-related initiatives.
- Participate in Oliver’s organizational and fundraising efforts as requested (e.g., Annual Gala and grant proposals)
- Serve as advocate to parents and families around the Independent school experience
- Plan and implement Community Service and Student Leadership programs
- Plan activities to connect scholars to each other and the larger organization
- Facilitate the New Scholars Seminar class during the 5 week summer program for students entering HS.
- Supervise scholars on annual College tour and during Boarding School week in the summer.
- Assist with identifying speakers for a variety of events year-round
- Support the Oliver Parents Council with execution of organized events as needed
- Assist with projects and other duties as needed and requested within the organization
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters a plus
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is preferred
- Excellent writing and public speaking skills
- 2+ years engaging high school students
- Guidance or college admissions a plus
- Knowledge of independent day and boarding schools is preferred
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends
- Able to do domestic travel; valid driver’s license is required
