Communication & Marketing Intern

Oliver Scholars prepares high-achieving Black and Latino students from underserved New York City communities for success at top independent schools and prestigious colleges. We provide crucial support for our Scholars so they can realize their full potential and ultimately give back to the city, the nation, and the world.
Position Summary and Reporting:
Oliver Scholars seeks a creative, knowledgeable intern to assist marketing and communications efforts. This position reports to the Senior Communications & Marketing Strategist and is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of marketing, branding, and communications for an educational nonprofit organization.
Responsibilities:
- Update and maintain Oliver’s social media presence, including scheduling updates in advance, selecting images, and curating content from internal and external sources to enhance partnerships and engagement.
- Research and share articles, videos, news reports, and statistics related to education, college access, social justice, and disparities in educational attainment based on race and class.
- Identify and connect Oliver’s social media feeds with influencers in the college access space, including researchers, journalists, organizations, policymakers, and independent school administrators.
- Support event planning efforts, including coordinating logistics, assisting with promotional materials, and ensuring smooth execution.
- Attend and document Oliver's events through photography and live social media coverage, capturing key moments for digital and print communications.
- Assist in drafting event recaps, blog posts, and feature stories highlighting Oliver’s impact and initiatives.
- Help identify communications-related partnership opportunities with influential organizations in college access, such as NPOs, policymakers, independent researchers, and DEI professionals in independent schools and higher education institutions.
- Assist in producing the Oliver newsletter, including content creation, editing, and layout.
- Assist with designing flyers, graphics, e-blasts, and other marketing materials as needed.
- Update the Oliver website as directed, ensuring content is current, relevant, and visually engaging.
Qualifications:
- An effective communicator, both written and oral.
- Completed or working toward a college degree, preferably in a related field (e.g., English, Marketing/Communications, Graphic Design, Photography, or Public Relations).
- Previous internship or related experience is a must, especially in marketing or communications.
- Proficiency in Adobe Suite is highly desired.
- Knowledge of basic HTML and graphic design is highly desired.
- Must be computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel).
- Self-motivated, organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize, and able to multi-task.
- Enthusiasm for education, social justice, and equity.
